Obituary:
Leonard “Bill” DeMello passed away July 10, 2023 in Visalia, California. He reached his milestone 100 th birthday last December 13th. He was born in Traver, California to Antonio and Lenora Rose DeMello. He was the fifth of eight children. He began working full-time at the age of 13 to help support the family and worked until his early 70s. He spent 50 plus years of his career working as a beer salesman for Acurso Distributing and Sequoia Beverage as well as owning his own beer distributorship for several years. He married Elizabeth Mello, in 1946; they were married 49 years before her passing in 1995. He then married Margaret Mancebo Costa in 1996; they were married 24 years before her passing in 2020. Bill was involved in a variety of organizations over the years including the PPAV Board of Directors, The Moose Lodge, Knights of Columbus, Tulare Cabrillo Civic Club and the PFSA lodge. Playing Santa was one of his favorite volunteer activities. There are way too many “Bill” stories to share in an obituary. He worked extremely hard his entire life to provide a better life for his family. But you never had to guess what he thought because he spoke his mind! And he could do any mathematical calculation in his head, but couldn’t give you an answer if you gave him a piece of paper and a calculator. He is survived by his son Michael DeMello of Goldendale, WA and his daughter Mary (Richard) Hernandez of Tulare. He is also survived by his grandchildren Erin (Daniel) Oliveros and Antonio DeMello as well as three great grandchildren. He has one surviving sister Bernice Silveria of Visalia. The family would like to recognize Joe and Melanie Pira of J&M Home care along with their team that has provided dad’s full-time care for the past 9 years. American Care Hospice and their team also assisted with his care the last 4 weeks. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice, especially a hospice group.
